Omnichannel Payments
This section covers everything about accepting payments with wallee: how a payment is processed, which commercial model fits your business, and how to connect your sales channels — online, in-store and at unattended machines.
How payments work in wallee
wallee gives you one unified interface to process all supported payment methods through every available processor, using one standardized payment process. Whatever the payment method — card, TWINT, invoice or wallet — and whichever processor handles it, your integration stays the same.
Every payment is represented by a transaction that moves through a defined set of states, from creation to a final state. Your system reacts to these states rather than to payment-method-specific behaviour, which is what keeps a multi-method setup manageable.
- Transaction States — the states a transaction moves through and how to handle each one.
- Processors, Payment Methods and Connectors — the three entities you configure before a payment method appears at checkout.
- Payment set-ups in wallee — wallee payments, additional payment methods and alternative payment methods compared.
Two ways to accept payments
- wallee payments
- Direct acquiring
One contract, one settlement. wallee payments is our payment facilitator model: you accept the essential payment methods — Visa, Mastercard, PostFinance, TWINT and many more — online and in-store through a single agreement with us, and receive all transactions in one consolidated settlement report.
Activate it through the online onboarding. See Wallee Payments and the Onboarding chapter.
Your own contracts, managed in wallee. With direct acquiring you use external processors or full payment service providers (PSPs), each requiring its own contract and credentials, while you still manage everything through wallee. They replace or supplement wallee's default acquiring channels.
See Direct Acquiring.
The two models are not mutually exclusive: you can integrate additional payment methods alongside wallee acceptance at any time.
Choose your sales channel
| Channel | What it covers | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Online payments | Webshop checkouts, payment links, subscriptions, shop plugins and API integrations | Online Payments |
| In-store payments | Physical terminals, till integrations, SoftPOS on Android | In-store Payments |
| Unattended payments | Vending and self-service machines, using the same terminal and interface setup | In-store Payments |
All channels run in the same space, so transactions from every channel appear in one transaction list and one settlement.
Integration modes
How the customer enters their payment details depends on the integration mode you choose:
| Mode | The customer… |
|---|---|
| Payment Page | …enters the payment details on a page hosted by us. |
| iFrame | …enters the payment details in an iframe hosted by us and embedded in your website. |
| Lightbox | …enters the payment details in an overlay on top of your website. |
| Mobile web view | …pays inside a web view in your mobile app. |
| Terminal | …taps or inserts the card at a physical terminal. |
| Payment link | …opens a link or QR code that starts the payment on a hosted page. |
| Charge flow | …is not present: an automated process requests the payment via a message with a payment URL. |
| Direct card processing | …enters the card number in a form provided by you. |
With direct card processing the card data reaches your own systems, so the card schemes require additional security measures from you and your PCI scope grows substantially. All other modes keep the payment data on our PCI DSS Level 1 compliant infrastructure. See Checkout Integrations for the online modes.
